Checkers: A Global Classic of Strategy

Checkers (also known as British Draughts) is one of the world's most popular strategy board games. It involves diagonal moves of uniform game pieces and mandatory captures by jumping over opponent pieces. It is a game of perfect information, meaning nothing is hidden from either player, making it a pure battle of logic and foresight. Whether you call it Checkers or Draughts, the goal remains the same: outmaneuver your opponent and dominate the board.

A Brief History of Checkers

The origins of Checkers can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, where a similar game called 'Alquerque' was played as far back as 3000 BC. The modern version we play today began to take shape in France around the 12th century, when the game of Alquerque was adapted to the 64-square chessboard. By the 18th century, the rules were standardized into the version known as British Draughts or American Checkers. Today, it remains a beloved pastime and a competitive sport worldwide.

Popular Variations

While American Checkers (8x8 board) is the most common version in the US and UK, many other variations exist. 'Pro Checkers' (KP) uses approved tournament openings. 'Anti-Checkers' (KA) flips the objective—the winner is the first person to lose all their pieces. Other versions include 'Crowded Checkers' (10x10 board), 'Sparse Checkers', and 'Mule Checkers', each adding unique twists to the classic formula.

Setting Up the Board

Checkers is played on a standard 64-square board, but only the 32 dark-colored squares are used. Each player begins with 12 pieces (checkers) placed in the three rows closest to them. The board is oriented so that each player has a dark square on their far left.

Essential Checkers Concepts

  • Dark Squares: All movement and play occur exclusively on the 32 dark squares of the board.
  • Crowning (Kinging): When a piece reaches the farthest row on the opponent's side, it is crowned and becomes a King. Your turn ends immediately upon crowning.
  • Kings: A King can move backward as well as forward diagonally. It can only move a distance of one space.
  • Mandatory Jumping: If you have an opportunity to capture an opponent's piece, you MUST take it. This rule is central to the game's strategy.

Object of the Game

The primary object of Checkers is to capture all of your opponent's pieces or to position your pieces so that your opponent has no available moves left.

Step-by-Step Guide

  • 1. Move Forward: Start the game by moving one of your front-row pieces diagonally forward into a dark square.
  • 2. Capture Pieces: If you are next to an opponent's piece and there is a gap behind it, jump over it to capture it. If that piece can jump again, keep jumping!
  • 3. Reaching the End: Move your pieces toward the opponent's back row to earn a King. A piece becomes a King only when it lands on the last row.
  • 4. King's Power: Once crowned, your King can move and jump both forward and backward, giving you a massive tactical advantage.
  • 5. Winning: Continue the battle until your opponent has no pieces left or no moves to make.
